The Companion Card Program is funded by the Victorian Government and has been developed to promote the existing right of people with a disability to access and participate in community activities without having to always pay for two admissions; one for themselves and one for their companion. It is issued free of charge.

Rundown

I wouldn’t be without my Companion Card because it enables me to regularly visit Her Majesty’s Theatre here in Ballarat, to see various performances. I pay my admission and my carer goes free! This year I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the musicals ‘Sweet Charity’ and ‘Annie’, ‘Pirates of Penzance’, ‘Underland’ presented by The Sydney Dance Company, ‘Rhythm of the Dance’ performed by an Irish Dance Group, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ performed by the Russian National Ballet and two interesting plays -‘Flatfoot’ and ‘Minefields & Miniskirts’. I can also visit the Art Gallery and other venues, not only here but throughout the State.

You may be eligible for a card if you have a permanent disability that is likely to be present for the rest of your life, even if the effects of the disability may fluctuate. If you need a ‘companion’; someone to help you to the toilet, to negotiate steps, navigate a wheelchair, or find your way around venues, etc. you are entitled to apply for a card. A “Companion” is a paid or unpaid assistant or carer who accompanies a cardholder, to enable them to access various venues. Instead of having to pay the additional cost of entry for your carer the card allows him/her free entry to some venues.

For more information about where you can use your card and a full list of venues/activities that have officially registered to accept the Companion Card visit the web site at http://www.companioncard.org.au. or ring 1800 650 611 to obtain a Cardholder Handbook and application form.

I haven’t actually saved money by having my Companion Card because I now go to the theatre more often and enjoy a wider variety of performances – I love live theatre! Don’t stay at home, with a little help you too can get out and enjoy some activities…...

Did you know that Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Regent Theatre here in Ballarat have lifts?
